Georg Friedrich Haas' Poéme Premieres in Cleveland
Apr. 01, 2006
Georg Friedrich Haas's Poéme was premiered by The Cleveland Orchestra on March 23 at Severance Hall with Franz Welser-Most conducting. Writing in The Plain-Dealer, Daniel Rosenberg describes the work unfolding "as a series of evolving textures and colors, with climaxes suggesting a spaceship taking off..." The composer has become particularly noted for his striking use of microtones and, while used sparingly in Poéme, the foreshortened intervals contribute to beautiful and luminous textures throughout. Haas is currently developing an opera based on "Melancholia" by the Norwegian writer Jon Fosse on commission from Opera National de Paris.
