Georg Friedrich Haas' limited approximations in World Premiere

Oct. 13, 2010

The SWR Baden Baden and Freiburg Symphony Orchestra, led by Sylvain Cambreling, premieres Georg Friedrich Haas' limited approximations, a concerto for six micro-tonally tuned pianos and orchestra, on October 17 at the Mozart Hall in Donaueschingen, Germany.

limited approximations utilizes a particular tuning of the six pianos that enables music within a scale of 72 equal frequency ratios per octave to be heard precisely. Haas creates a vastly expanded palette of color and sound with this technique than would normally be achieved by use of a conventional twelve-tone temperament.

Looking ahead, Haas’ spectacular ensemble work, in vain, is given a repeat performance by Argento at RPI’s Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center in Troy, New York on November 12.  Argento’s New York premiere performance of the work at Columbia University’s Miller Theater in 2009 was dubbed by Steve Smith in Time Out NY as one of the ten best performances of 2009.  He commented:

The Argento Chamber Ensemble was characteristically brilliant in this Composer Portrait concert, featuring a powerful, mysterious and evocative modern musical rite by Austrian composer Georg Friedrich Haas.

in vain is one of Haas’ signature works and is fast becoming recognized as a major modern masterpiece.
