Georg Friedrich Haas and Victoria Borisova-Ollas Commemorate Mendelssohn's 200th Birthday with World Premieres

Sep. 15, 2009

Felix Bartholdy Mendelssohn, born in 1809, will be honored in the 2009/2010 season by countless orchestras and ensembles across the world. Among these homages, two recent world premieres of new works by Georg Friedrich Haas and Victoria Borisova-Ollas commemorate Mendelssohn's influence in new and innovative ways. Borisova-Ollas saw the world premiere of her Psalm 42 (As the Deer Cries) by the RIAS Chamber Choir Berlin and the RSO Berlin on September 13 at the Domkirche St. Eberhard, in Stuttgart, Germany. Psalm 42 is a setting of the eponymous psalm, the setting of which Mendelssohn considered to be his best sacred work.

On August 28and 30, Georg Friedrich Haas' Traum in des Sommers Nacht premiered at the 2009 Mendelssohn Festival in Leipzig by the Gewandhaus Orchestra under Riccardo Chailly. Haas admires Mendelssohn, particularly when "the composition of the sound is the main part of the musical composition." According to Haas, "Mendelssohn forestalled Schönberg's utopia of a ‘sound-colour-melody' (klangfarbenmelodie). He opened doors to a room that the serial music of the 1950s was to enter later."
