Gavin Bryars's <em>The Sinking of the Titanic</em> at the Winnipeg New Music Festival

As part of its 25th anniversary season, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra’s New Music Festival presents a major multisensory performance of Gavin Bryars’s seminal The Sinking of the Titanic. The performance takes place at Winnipeg’s Pan-Am Pool on January 28 with the orchestra’s musicians spread out around the water, and a children’s chorus added to the instrumentation at varying heights above the audience. Julian Pellicano conducts, with electronics performed by Festival curator Matthew Patton. The performance also includes lighting design as well as meditative synchronized swimming choreographed for the occasion.

The program, titled “Music and Trauma”, begins with the premiere of Afterlife Mutilation, a new work by Patton, which serves as an epilogue to Bryars’s Titanic. The event opens with a pre-concert panel titled “The Use of Music in Recovery from Trauma.”
