Gavin Bryars’ The Sinking of the Titanic at the Guggenheim Museum

Mar. 30, 2011

In collaboration with the visual artist Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, the Wordless Music Orchestra performs Gavin Bryars’ The Sinking of the Titanic in a new site-specific interpretation at the Guggenheim Museum in New York on April 14, 2011. The performance marks the 99th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, which sank on April 15, 1912 and coincides with the Guggenheim’s exhibition, “The Great Upheaval: Modern Art from the Guggenheim Collection, 1910-1918.” As every performance of The Sinking of the Titanic is different, this interpretation takes over the main rotunda of the Guggenheim, with the audience taking part in the performance during two separate “boardings.” The day following the performance, the Guggenheim hosts a conversation between Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster and Joan Young, Guggenheim Associate Curator of Contemporary Art.
