Friedrich Cerha's Spiegel I-VII Performed at the Wiener Konzerthaus

Nov. 01, 2021

Friedrich Cerha's orchestral work, Spiegel, has been performed in its entirety only a handful of times: in Graz in 1972, in Vienna in 1977, 1989, 2006, 2011, and in Salzburg in 1996 and 2021. After cancelling a performance of the work in 2020 due to the COVID pandemic, the Wien Modern Festival presents Spiegel I-VII in 2021, the year of Cerha's 95th birthday. The Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Ingo Metzmacher, will perform this musical spectacle on November 19 at the Wiener Konzerthaus.

The composer noted:

"The optical aspect played an essential part in all phases of creating the Spiegel. When writing down the scenic draft (1961) it was always clear to me that there cannot be a single, compulsory bracing of the optical and acoustical level; instead, the combination of both creates a field of overlapping in which various individual solutions are possible. The director and the choreographer should therefore feel as little bound as possible, to have space to unfold their personal creativity. "
