Finale and a World Premiere: the Mahler-Scartazzini Cycle is Complete
Jun. 30, 2025
On June5, a performance of the complete Mahler-Scartazzini cycle was presented at the Volkshaus Jena. The Adagio from Mahler’s 10th Symphony was played first, followed by all ten compositions by Andrea Lorenzo Scartazzini – including the premiere of the last piece, Einkehr for soprano, alto, chorus, and orchestra. Scartazzi composed the short movements relating to Mahler’s symphonies over the last seven years while serving as Composer in Residence at the Jena Philharmonic. Einkehr is a setting of the first verse of Hölderlin’s elegy “Brot und Wein”. The poem evokes images of a city which comes to rest, of the day which ends, and of silence and reflection. It was premiered by the Jena Philharmonic, conducted by Simon Gaudenz. The chorus parts were sung by the Jenaer Madrigalkreis, and the solo parts by soprano Nina Koufochristou and alto Evelyn Krahe. A crowning conclusion! Read more about the Mahler-Scartazzini cycle in [t]aktehere.
Parts 1-9 of the cycle have already been released on CD by Odradek Records. The final part will follow in the fall of 2025.
