Erich Wolfgang Korngold 50th Anniversary Commemoration Concerts

During the 2007-08 season, orchestras across the country are programming the works of Erich Wolfgang Korngold to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the composer's passing. Following the New York Pops performance of his Violin Concerto at Carnegie Hall on October 26, the month of November holds many more Korngold offerings. On November 4 the Princeton Symphony Orchestra performs his Theme and Variations, Op. 42. On November 29 members of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra will perform Korngold's Cello Concerto and his Suite for Left Hand Piano and Strings at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. Also this month, baritone Ryan de Ryke, pianist Daniel Schlosberg, and violinist Jill Jermyn will perform rarely heard Korngold chamber and vocal works at Austrian Cultural Forum venues in New York, Washington, D.C. and Baltimore.

Naxos recently released a new installment in its Film Music Classics series with world premiere recordings of Korngold's complete scores to the films The Sea Hawk (1940) and Deception (1946). This double disc recording includes music omitted from the final release of the films and the trailer music for both. A Financial Times review reads:

First complete recordings of The Sea Hawk, widely regarded as Korngold's finest film score, and Deception, his last, will be self-recommending to film music aficionados. The performances are thoroughly researched, and the notes are excellent. The lush romanticism and fabulous derring-do of Korngold the Hollywood composer shine through.
