Ensemble Modern at the Kurt Weill Fest
Mar. 02, 2016

The annual Kurt Weill Fest in Dessau, Germany continues this month with a variety of performances in all shapes and sizes. Ensemble Modern’s highly acclaimed 2015 concert presentation of Die Dreigroschenoper returns to the festival on March 4, with Ute Gfrerer as Polly and HK Gruber conducting. Ensemble Modern also presents Weill's Mahagonny Songspiel and Kleine Dreigroschenmusik on March 5. Additional programming includes Der Zar lässt sich photographieren, Sonata for Cello and Piano and Concerto for Violin and Wind Instruments. A new production of Zaubernacht continues until the festival’s close on March 13.
And just announced: London’s National Theatre mounts a new production of The Threepenny Opera this spring. Rory Kinnear (Penny Dreadful, Spectre, The Imitation Game) stars as the quintessential antihero Macheath, with a new translation by Simon Stevens (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime), directed by Rufus Norris. Performances start May 18 and run through August 31.
