Ensemble Intercontemporain Performs Wolfgang Rihm's Tutuguri in Paris

Jan. 15, 2022

Ensemble Intercontemporain, under the baton of Matthias Pintscher, performed Wolfgang Rihm's Tutuguri at the Philharmonie de Paris - Grande Salle Pierre Boulez on January 17. The production featured Ensemble Intercontemporain and the Orchestre du Conservatoire de Paris, with Matisse Humbert as narrator. Tutuguri is based on a poem by Antonin Artaud (1896-1948) written following his experience under the influence of the hallucinogenic drug, peyote, taken during a shamanic ritual during his trip to Mexico in 1936. The traditional "Rite of the Black Sun" which followed the ingestion of peyote in Antonin Artaud's poem, inspired Wolfgang Rihm to compose a monumental score comprised of six distinct pieces for varying numbers. Together, they form a vast "danced poem", nearly two hours of music for large orchestra, tape and a narrator who chants Artaud's text.

Additionally, on January 20-23, the Rudolf-Wild-Halle in Eppelheim will host its String Quartet Festival. Visitors will be able to experience a total of fifteen Rihm works at the event.
