LoveMusik, Based on Kurt Weill and Lotte Lenya, Opens Strong in New York, Receives Four Tony Nominations

Jun. 05, 2007

The new Broadway musical LoveMusik opened to rave reviews in May. With Michael Cerveris as Kurt Weill, Donna Murphy as Lotte Lenya and production from Hal Prince, the unique love life of two intriguing musical icons comes to life amidst the music of Kurt Weill, featuring many of Weill’s best-loved songs, such as “Speak Low,” “Surabaya Johnny,” “Mack the Knife” and “September Song.”

The New York Times called LoveMusik “unmissable,” and Bloomberg proclaimed, “If you’re looking for a musical that leaves its recent and current competition miles, if not light years, behind, LoveMusik is it.” Now LoveMusik contends for four Tony awards, with the following nominations:

Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical – Michael Cerveris as Kurt Weill
Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical – Donna Murphy as Lotte Lenya
Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical – David Pittu as Bertolt Brecht
Best Orchestrations – Jonathan Tunick

The Tony awards take place on June 10 at 8 PM Eastern and can be seen nationally on CBS.

Even as the composer himself has now become the subject of a musical, his music continues to proliferate throughout the world. The play with music Der Silbersee sees its Irish premiere run this month with performances in Johnstown Castle, outside the town of Wexford, during the Wexford Festival Opera. At the Vienna Volksoper, the revival of Der Kuhhandel, the story of love, humor, cows and Central American dictators, continues with David Poutney’s staging, first seen at the 2004 Bregenz Festival, and Christoph Eberle conducting. The production is being recorded for a DVD release currently in the works from Capriccio.
