Dobrinka Tabakova's In Paradisum Premiered in London, Accompanying Victoria's 1605 Requiem
Apr. 20, 2026
The 1605 Requiem of the great Renaissaince polyphonic master, Tomás Luis de Victoria was his final work and ends with the Responsory: "Libera me, Domine." 421 years later, Dobrinka Tabakova has composed a companion conclusion to the work. In paradisum, a six-minute journey for mixed choir was premiered on March 31 at St Columba's Church in London by the ORA Singers under the baton of Suzi Digby OBE.
In In paradisum, Tabakova treats the original Gregorian chant like a wash of watercolor paint. The harmonies are blurred and ethereal, creating a sense of a musical mirage. From this shimmering texture, a serene, otherworldly procession slowly emerges before dissolving back into a luminous echo. It’s a rare kind of music that feels both deeply ancient and incredibly fresh. While written to complete Victoria's Requiem, this piece is a standalone gem—a perfect, light-filled ending for any Requiem program.
Tabakova's music has been performed across continents over the past few weeks: on April 3, the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra gave the Belgian premiere of her work Rewilding (IV from Earth Suite) in Antwerp, followed by a performance of Dawn (from Sun Triptych) on April 9-12 by the Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra in Easton, Maryland. In June, the Bochum Symphony Orchestra will present her orchestral work Orpheus’ Comet.
