Cleveland's Contemporary Youth Orchestra Premieres New Fanfare by Bernard Rands

Music for Liza and the Contemporary Youth Orchestra, a new fanfare by Bernard Rands written for Cleveland’s Contemporary Youth Orchestra and their intrepid music director Liza Grossman, receives its world premiere on December 7 at the Waetjen Auditorium at Cleveland State University. The new piece opens the orchestra's 20th season in a concert honoring Rands, which also features his orchestral works London Serenade and Danza Petrificada.

Through two decades of intrepid programming, the Contemporary Youth Orchestra have broken ground as the only youth orchestra in the United States dedicated to the study and performance of contemporary orchestral literature. December 7 marks the orchestra's second collaboration with Rands: in 2004, Grossman led the group in a performance of his Fanfare for a Festival, Le Tambourin, Suite No. 2, and Tre Canzoni Senza Parole. Music for Liza and the Contemporary Youth Orchestra will serve as the opening music for each of the orchestra's concerts this season.

Also this month, the Spektral Quartet performs Rands’s String Quartet No. 2 on Chicago’s WFMT Radio in a live broadcast concert.
