Chicago Symphony Orchestra Features Pierre Boulez in "Beyond the Score"
Oct. 31, 2014

In honor of the 90th birthday of Pierre Boulez this season, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra presents two programs dedicated to the composer's music and his long-standing relationship as the Helen Regenstein Conductor Emeritus.
On November 12, Pablo Heras-Casado leads the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Boulez’s first work for orchestra alone, Figures-Doubles-Prismes. The piece was premiered in 1964 with Boulez leading the Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra, and has since been championed by orchestras worldwide. Additional performances take place November 13-15 at the Chicago Symphony Center.
On November 14 and 16, the orchestra presents “Beyond the Score: A Pierre Dream”, a multimedia theatrical journey combining live performances with rare archival footage and recent interviews with Boulez. The production takes place within a specially designed acoustic space by renowned architect Frank Gehry. Among the many works featured are Incises, une page d’éphéméride, Messagesquisse, Improvisation I sur Mallarmé, …explosante-fixe…, Memoriale, Dialogue de l’ombre double, Le marteau sans maître and Sonatine, with soloists to include pianists Winston Choi and Amy Briggs as well as soprano Melissa Hughes.
Details on the programs can be found at cso.org and Beyond the Score.
