Chaya Czernowin “Composer Portrait” at Miller Theatre

Apr. 14, 2011

The acclaimed composer portrait series of Columbia University’s Miller Theatre continues with an evening of music by Israeli-born composer Chaya Czernowin, performed by the Either/Or Ensemble on Friday, April 15. Recently appointed to the faculty of Harvard University, Czernowin has left her mark across all genres of contemporary classical music with her ethereal, delicate and wholly original sound world, boldly experimenting with instrumentation, electronics, sound and structure.

Perhaps her greatest achievement lies in her stage works: her breakthrough chamber opera Pnima...Inwards, which premiered at the Munich Biennale in 2000, received the Opernwelt magazine award for Best Performance of the Year; and her operatic fragment Adama, a contemporary counterpoint to Mozart’s unfinished Zaïd · Adama, debuted on the 250th Anniversary of the Salzburg Festival in 2006. The composer has been commissioned by and worked with the leading ensembles and organizations of the world including the Ensemble Intercontemporain, Ensemble Modern, IRCAM, the Arditti Quartet and more.

Miller Theatre presents a sampling of Czernowin’s singular chamber oeuvre: Seed I for string quartet, Die Kreuzung for three players, The hour glass bleeds still for string sextet, the US premiere of Slow Duo for two bass clarinets, Anea for string octet and Winter Songs II: Stones for ten players.
