Apr. 20, 2022

The production, Joaquín Rodrigo, el niño que soñó la música (The Boy Who Dreamed of Music) tells the inspiring story of a young blind boy who dreamed of being a musician, overcame many challenges, and became a great composer. Excerpts of Rodrigo's brilliant compositions frame the brilliant story of his life, as told by a narrator. The text is available in Spanish and English to suit the needs of the audience.

Joaquín Rodrigo, el niño que soñó la música is flexible by design and can be performed with as few forces as a narrator and pianist, or with a narrator, actor(s) chorus, and orchestra, or virtually any other arrangement one can imagine. This allows ensembles of all sizes and means to bring this triumphant story to audiences around the world. The piece features music by the great composer, including his beloved Concierto de Aranjuez, stately Fantasia para un gentilhombre, symphonic poem, Per la flor del lliri blau, and the joyous A la clavelina.

This month, scholar and pianist, Dr. Dena Kay Jones led a compelling performance of El niño que soño la música in a version for pianist, narrator, and actor at the University of Texas in El Paso. The performance can be viewed here.

Joaquin Rodrigo aptly noted: “Music fulfills an important educational function because, above all, it cultivates the spirit.” He also said, "I have observed that people who are moved by music are more sensitive to all manifestations of life.”

Audiences of all ages are sure to be inspired by the true story of a young boy who overcame disability and tragedy to find his place in the world of music. The versatility of the composition means that it can be easily employed by touring and educational companies to great effect.
