Central City Chorus Presents US Premiere of David Matthews's Psalm 23

On December 7 and 8, the Central City Chorus partners with the Adelphi Chamber Orchestra to present the US premiere of David Matthews's Psalm 23 (The Lord is my Shepherd) for SATB chorus and organ. The performance takes place at St. Ignatius of Antioch Episcopal Church in New York under the heading “Music Magnifical and Mighty”. Composed in 2003, Psalm 23 was commissioned by the Hampstead and Highgate Festival and was premiered at the festival by the Hampstead Parish Church Choir. The performance is one of several that take place this year in honor of Matthews’s 70th birthday.

Early in his career, Matthews was an assistant to Benjamin Britten, who celebrates his centenary this year. To honor the occasion, director Phillip Cheah leads the chorus in a performance of Britten’s The Company of Heaven, which was given its NY premiere by the Central City Chorus in 1992. First presented as a radio broadcast by the BBC in 1937, The Company of Heaven is a cantata for speakers, soloists, SATB chorus, and small orchestra.
