Boston Symphony Orchestra Performs Thomas Adès's <em>Totentanz</em>, Kicking Off Artistic Partnership

Thomas Adès begins his appointment as Boston Symphony Orchestra’s Artistic Partner this month as he leads the orchestra in three performances of his symphonic vocal work Totentanz, for mezzo-soprano, baritone and orchestra, on November 3, 4 and 5. The work, which premiered at the 2013 BBC Proms Festival and had its US premiere with the New York Philharmonic in 2015, has been regarded as a “cultural event of the first magnitude” (The Telegraph). The Boston Symphony Orchestra's performances feature mezzo-soprano Christianne Stotijn and baritone Mark Stone.

As a prelude to these upcoming orchestral performances, Adès joined the Boston Symphony Chamber Players on October 30 as conductor and pianist for a performance of his Court Studies from The Tempest, as well as his own arrangements of two songs from Purcell’s The Tempest, alongside works by Britten, Brahms, Stravinsky and Schubert. On November 2, the Goethe-Institut Boston hosts Adès for a panel discussion on his Totentanz as well as his perspecive on art from the German Renaissance to today.

Also this month, Michael Butterman leads the Boulder Philharmonic in a performance of Adès’s Three Studies from Couperin on November 6.
