BMOP's Recording of Orchestral Works by Ellen Taaffe Zwilich Highlights Her Outstanding Talent

Jun. 28, 2024

Amidst other noteworthy recordings released by BMOP Sound this spring, a recording of orchestral works by Ellen Taaffe Zwilich stands out. The disc includes her Symphony No. 5, Concerto Elegia, and Commedia dell'Arte. Zwilich, the first woman to receive the Pulitzer Prize in music and the very first holder of the Carnegie Hall Composer’s Chair, among other honors, celebrated her 85th birthday on April 30, 2024. A prolific composer in virtually all musical media, Zwilich has produced four symphonies and other orchestral essays, numerous concertos for a wide variety of solo instruments, and a sizable canon of chamber and recital pieces. Her works are played regularly by the leading orchestras and ensembles throughout the world. Many of her works have been issued on recordings and she has been the subject of several radio and television feature programs.

We are pleased to publish several works by Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, including Divertimento for flute, clarinet, violin, and cello; Fantasy For Harpsichord; Praeludium for solo organ; Quintet for Clarinet and String Quartet; as well as Zwilich's popular Concerto Grosso 1985.
