Bernard Rands's <em>Tre Canzoni Senza Parole</em> with the Detroit Symphony Youth Orchestra

On February 26, Michael Lewanski leads the Detroit Symphony Youth Orchestra in a performance of Bernard Rands’s Tre Canzoni Senza Parole. The performance takes place at Detroit’s Orchestra Hall.

Tre Canzoni Senza Parole was commissioned by The Philadelphia Orchestra in honor of Riccardo Muti and was given its premiere in 1992 with Rands leading the orchestra. The work has since been recorded by the Oregon Symphony for Delos Records, conducted by James DePreist.

On January 29, the Boston Conservatory Wind Ensemble gave a performance of Rands’s Ceremonial led by Eric Hewitt at the Fenway Center in Boston, MA. Ceremonial was premiered in 1993 by the University of Michigan Symphonic Band as part of the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA) Convention. 

Ceremonial is a fascinating exploration of the multiple combinations of wind instruments and resulting colors possible within the wind band context. A single melodic theme is repeated ten times throughout the course of the work subsequently played by different combinations of instruments, always increasing in density and in complexity of timbre.
