Bernard Rands’ “now again” – fragments from Sappho at University of Nevada, Las Vegas
Jan. 08, 2008
The University of Nevada, Las Vegas presents Bernard Rands’ “now again” – fragments from Sappho on Sunday, February 2. The performance comes as part of UNLV’s Nevada Encounters of New Music (NEON), an intensive four day program of concerts, lectures, private lessons and master classes. Bernard Rands will be participating in the symposium as faculty composer, and his “now again” -fragments from Sappho will see its first performance since the world premiere last year by Philadelphia’s Network for New Music. Composed for mezzo-soprano and ten-piece ensemble, Rands draws from the work of ancient Greek humanist poet Sappho. In this work, Rands takes excerpts from the poetry - sometimes no more than one-word fragments - and creates a dialogue between the mezzo-soprano soloist and two female voices in the ensemble. In describing the piece, Rands explains: The work, though continuous, is in four sections separated by three brief instrumental interludes. The four sections suggest Invocation; Convocation; Consummation and Introspection. It might be thought of as a Cantata Erotica, though I will leave that to the minds of the listeners.
