Bernard Rands Portraits at Miller Theatre, Sheffield University and London Festival of American Music

On November 13, Columbia University’s Miller Theatre celebrates the music of Bernard Rands in his 80th birthday year with a Composer Portrait concert. The program includes the New York premiere of Rands’s Folk Songs, featuring countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo and the International Contemporary Ensemble, conducted by Christian Knopp. The program also includes performances of Concertino, for solo oboe and ensemble with oboist Nicholas Masterson, as well as déjà for chamber ensemble and Memo 6 with saxophonist Ryan Muncy.

On November 9, Sheffield University—located in the composer’s birth town—hosts a special birthday concert in Rands’s honor with the university's new music ensemble. The program includes déjà, Concertino, Preludes and Three Pieces for Piano along with music by Luigi Dallapiccola. Following the performance, Odaline de la Martinez leads the Lontano Ensemble in a portrait of Rands’s music as part of the London Festival of American Music. The program, which features performances of "Prelude…sans voix parmi les voix…", Memo 4 for solo flute, Walcott Songs, Scherzi, “…in the receding mist…” and Memo 8 for solo oboe, takes place at the St. James Studio in London on November 11.

Additional performances this month include Rands’s String Quartet No. 2 with the Spektral Quartet and Three Pieces for Piano with pianist Amy Briggs at the University of Chicago on November 2.
