Bernard Rands in Chicago, Cleveland and Beyond
Oct. 04, 2016

The music of Bernard Rands can be heard throughout the country this month, with performances at the first-annual Ear Taxi Festival in Chicago, the Cleveland Institute of Music and Indiana State University.
Spearheaded by composer Augusta Read Thomas, the Ear Taxi Festival (October 5-10) is a celebration of Chicago’s thriving contemporary music scene. On October 9, Michael Lewanski leads the Ensemble 20+ in a performance of Rands’s Concertino for solo oboe and chamber ensemble featuring oboist Andrew Nogal. Commissioned by the Network for New Music in Philadelphia, Concertino unfolds in one continuous movement segmented into two formal sections: the first a fast, complex and virtuosic development of material presented in an opening cadenza; the second comprised of alternating slower, lyrical and progressively faster, dramatic material.
The Cleveland Institute of Music honors Pierre Boulez, who had a longstanding relationship with the musical community of Cleveland, in a series of concerts and recitals titled “The Boulez Legacy”. On October 30, the CIM New Music Ensemble performs Rands’s Prélude, and “…sans voix parmi les voix…” for flute, viola, and harp alongside Boulez’s Dérive I and Mémoriale (... explosante-fixe … Originel).
On October 19, Indiana State University gives a performance of Rands’s symphonic wind ensemble piece Ceremonial, led by conductor Roby George. Ceremonial is a fascinating exploration of the multiple combinations of wind instruments and resulting colors possible within the wind band context. A single melodic theme is repeated ten times throughout the course of the work subsequently played by different combinations of instruments, always increasing in density and in complexity of timbre.
