Australian Premiere of Stewart Wallace's <em>Harvey Milk</em> at Melbourne's Midsumma Festival

Stewart Wallace’s Harvey Milk, an opera in three acts, receives its Australian concert premiere on February 7, with an additional performance on Feburary 8, at St Kilda Town Hall in Melbourne, Australia. The performance is produced by Left Bauer Productions and takes place as part of Melbourne’s annual Midsumma Festival. 

Midsumma’s production, performed in concert with accompanist Toni Lalich and conductor Kathleen McGuire, features the Melbourne Gay and Lesbian Chorus with soloists Tod Strike, Jacob Caine, Nigel Huckle, Dimity Shepherd and Jerzy Kozlowski. Strike stars in the title role, with Jacob Caine performing the role of Dan White, the San Francisco city supervisor who assassinated Mr. Milk just ten months after he became the first openly gay man to hold public office in California.

With Harvey Milk, Wallace tells the story of a man who “had a foot in two separate ghettos: one gay, one Jewish.” The work traces Milk’s upbringing on Long Island in the wake of World War II, his experiences in New York City, and finally, his move to San Francisco and subsequent political career. Following its premiere, Harvey Milk was hailed as “an astounding achievement” (The Washington Post) and “one of the best new operas in years” (Chicago Tribune).
