Aspen Music Festival Features Works by Francisco Coll, Vijay Iyer, Pierre Jalbert, Shin-Ichiro Ikebe, Anthony Cheung, and George Perle

The Aspen Music Festival, now in its 67th season, runs from July 2 through August 23 with more than 300 concerts featuring opera, orchestral and chamber music taking place in the bucolic Rocky Mountains. Several programs feature the music of Schott/EAM’s composers, including works by Pierre Jalbert, George Perle, Vijay Iyer and Arvo Pärt as well as the U.S. premieres of Francisco Coll’s Liquid Symmetries and Shin-Ichiro Ikebe’s Flash!.

On July 6, the festival features George Perle’s Critical Moments 2 and Pierre Jalbert’s Secret Alchemy as part of its chamber music series in the Harris Concert Hall. Following that performance on July 11 is the U.S. premiere of Francisco Coll’s Liquid Symmetries, for 15 players.

Violin Kennifer Koh and Shai Wosner join the festival for a recital on July 15 in a program that includes Vijay Iyer’s recent Bridgetower Fantasy alongside Beethoven’s sonatas 1, 2 and 9. Iyer’s work was commissioned by Koh as part of her “Bridge to Beethoven” project and acts as “a collection of imaginings about George Bridgetower,” the violinist who originally premiered Beethoven’s “Kreutzer” Sonata (No. 9).

On July 20, Shin-Ichiro Ikebe’s Flash!, for twelve flutes in three groups, receives its U.S. premiere, conducted by Stephen Mulligan. Later that week, on July 25, Karol Szymanowski’s song cycle, Slopiewnie, for soprano and ensemble, receives a rare performance with soprano Esther Heideman and conductor Sydney Hodkinson. Slopiewnie was inspired by the atmospheric secessionist poems of Julian Tuwim. The music is fragile and refined, and the non-vibrato soprano voice frequently acts as an instrument that is playing in unison with the ensemble.

Additional performances throughout the festival include Erwin Schulhoff’s Hot-Sonate (arr. Harry White) on July 17, Arvo Pärt’s Fratres in a recital by violinist Joseph Swensen and pianist Jeffrey Kahane on July 22, Hindemith’s Symphonic Metamorphosis led by Michael Stern on August 2, Oliver Knussen’s Flourish with Fireworks on August 4, György Ligeti’s Romanian Concerto on August 12, conducted by Joshua Weilerstein, and Anthony Cheung’s SynchroniCities on August 15.
