Arvo Pärt Awarded the "Frontiers of Knowledge" Music Prize

Apr. 01, 2020

The Spanish BBVA Foundation has awarded to Arvo Pärt the 2020 "Frontiers of Knowledge" Award in the category "Music and Opera". Pärt was nominated by the director of the Pau Casals Foundation, Jordi Pardo.

The award is presented in eight categories to acknowledge outstanding achievements in the fields of natural sciences and technology, humanities and music. As its name denotes, the award is meant to recognize laureates who have shifted the frontiers of our knowledge of the world. Previous recipients of the award in Music and Opera include Steve Reich, Pierre Boulez, John Adams, György Kurtág, Helmut Lachenmann, Sofia Gubaidulina and Kaija Saariaho.

The jury for the prize is comprised of internationally renowned experts who are selected each year by the Foundation in collaboration with the Spanish National Research Council (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC)). This year the jury for the category of Music and Opera included Paul Douglas Hillier (artistic director of the collective Theatre of Voices, Denmark), Mauro Bucarelli (Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Italy), Pedro Halffter (composer and conductor, Spain), Andrew McGregor (BBC Radio 3 presenter, UK), Robert Sholl (Professor of Music, University of West London, UK), and Víctor García de Gomar (artistic director of Gran Teatre del Liceu, Spain).

BBVA is the largest bank in Spain and established the Foundation to support and recognize significant contributions to social values across a broad array of disciplines. The Frontiers of Knowledge Awards have been awarded since 2008.
