Anthony Davis's "There are many trails of tears" Premieres in Tulsa

On May 1, bass-baritone Davóne Tines and pianist Howard Watkins performed the world premiere of the aria, "There are many trails of tears" which will be part of the forthcoming opera Fire Across the Tracks: Greenwood 1921 with music by Anthony Davis and a libretto by Thulani Davis. The aria was commissioned by Tulsa Opera for their program "Greenwood Overcomes" presented for both live and virtual audiences on May 1 and 2. "Greenwood Overcomes," co-curated by Tulsa Opera's Artistic Director Tobias Picker and pianist Howard Watkins, was a special concert featuring works for voice and piano by twenty-three living Black composer, including eight world premieres. With this program, Tulsa Opera honors the resilience of Black Tulsans and Black America one hundred years after the Tulsa Race Massacre.
