Anne-Sophie Mutter Features Rihm and Penderecki at the New York Philharmonic
Mar. 30, 2011
New York Philharmonic Artist-in-Residence Anne-Sophie Mutter returned to the Philharmonic with four concerts of orchestral and chamber music from March 31 through April 3. Included in this run of performances was the world premiere of Wolfgang Rihm’s Dyade and US premiere of Krzysztof Penderecki’s Duo concertante. Both works for violin and double bass, they represent the latest fruit born of the long-standing artistic partnerships and friendships that Mutter maintains with each composer. Acclaimed bassist Roman Patkoló accompanies Mutter for each performance.
Rihm’s Dyade unfurls in a single movement divided into discernable sections in which the music travels an arch-like trajectory from its pensive, rubato beginning, to an ecstatic, virtuosic climax (feroce), and returning to a quiet, calm conclusion. The work is a show piece for both violin and double bass and within its framework Rihm deftly incorporates constantly shifting and wide-ranging tempi, expression and dynamics.
The Duo concertante is an ambitious work offering a wide range of emotion, from expressive recitatives to wild and flitting scherzando passages, in a compact form. Bassist Patkoló performs from a bass part which is written in scordatura, with the bass strings tuned a whole step higher.
