Anna Skryleva's Enigmatic Mirror for Soprano and Orchestra to be Premiered in Magdeburg

May. 31, 2024

Anna Skryleva's Mirror for soprano and orchestra will be premiered by the Magdeburgische Philharmonie and soprano Katerina von Bennigsen under Skryleva's baton on June 6-7 at the Opera House in Magdeburg.

Mirror is based on Skryleva's poem of the same name, a palindrome - which can be read from front to back - in which she transfers individual syllables and whole words into motif structures, so that the poem becomes not only the linguistic but also the formal basis of the composition. The piece is based on the "Solresol" language. This devised language was developed at the beginning of the 19th century by the Frenchman Jean François Sudre as a kind of musical Esperanto. A thought has long preoccupied Anna Skryleva: If music is indeed capable of bringing people of all nationalities together, it should be possible to use sounds to converse and unite people. Thus, she became aware of "Solresol" and decided to compose a piece of music based on it. Firstly, she created a "mirror poem" which is the basis for the development of the themes and their counterpoints in "Mirror." In the middle of the work, this poem is sung in English by a soprano with orchestral accompaniment. Every note in this work carries with it a message that can only be deciphered with the "key" of Solresol. As a principle of composition, Schoenberg's twelve-tone theory could be considered a parallel. However, in this case, it is the words that determine the sequence of tones, making for an exciting puzzle.
