Andrew Norman's Revised <em>Play</em> Debuts with Los Angeles Philharmonic; <em>Switch</em> with the Oregon Symphony and Esprit Orchestra

Several major works by Andrew Norman can be heard throughout the US and Canada this month, including the world premiere of the revised version of Norman’s orchestral masterpiece Play with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Additional performances include his percussion concerto Switch with both the Oregon Symphony and Esprit Orchestra, as well as The Great Swiftness with the Pasadena Symphony Orchestra.

Play, which was commissioned by Gil Rose and the Boston Modern Orchestra Project with funding from Music Alive, a national residency program of the League of American Orchestras and New Music USA, was inspired by the dynamic interactions inherent within the orchestra between the instruments, the players and the conductor. The work has been hailed as “a sprawling, engulfing, furiously unpredictable piece” (Alex Ross) and was nominated for a 2016 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Classical Composition. Gustavo Dudamel leads the Los Angeles Philharmonic in the premiere performances of Norman’s revised score as part of a west coast tour at the Walt Disney Concert Hall (October 28), Segerstrom Concert Hall (October 29) and Davies Symphony Hall (October 31).

Switch was written for and premiered by solo percussionist Colin Currie, and has since been performed by the Utah Symphony in its world premiere and the BBC Symphony Orchestra in its UK premiere. On October 22-24, Currie joins the Oregon Symphony for three performances of Switch, led by Carlos Kalmar, and percussionist Ryan Scott performs the concerto with the Esprit Orchestra, led by Alex Pauk in Toronto on October 23.

A work in the spirit of a fanfare, The Great Swiftness is inspired by an Alexander Calder sculpture “La Grande Vitesse,” located in Grand Rapids, Norman’s place of birth. The piece is featured on October 8 with the Pasadena Symphony Orchestra, conducted by David Lockington.
