Andrew Norman's The Great Swiftness Premieres at Grand Rapids Symphony

The Grand Rapids Symphony presents the world premiere of burgeoning young composer Andrew Norman's The Great Swiftness on September 23, 24 and 25. A work in the spirit of a fanfare, the music is inspired by an Alexander Calder sculpture, “La Grande Vitesse,” in downtown Grand Rapids. The piece, which kicks off Grand Rapids’ ArtPrize competition, is the second Norman work premiered by the Grand Rapids Symphony, who also debuted Light from Light in October of 2009

A composer in growing demand, having recently completed two new chamber works for the Scharoun Ensemble and members of the Berlin Philharmonic, Norman has been named the Composer for the City of Heidelberg, Germany, and his Drip Blip Sparkle Spin Glint Glide Glow Float Flop Chop Pop Shatter Splash will be performed by the Heidelberg Philharmonic Orchestra in their season-opening concert on September 29 under the baton of Cornelius Meister. As part of the Heidelberg residency, Norman has been commissioned to write a concerto for theremin and orchestra which will premiere on April 13 also conducted by Cornelius Meister.

On May 24 John Adams leads musicians from the Los Angeles Philharmonic through Norman's new piece for sinfonietta on the LA Phil's Green Umbrella series. In addition, Mr. Norman has recently been named the Composer-in-Residence with Boston Modern Orchestra Project for the 2011/12 and 2012/13 seasons.

On October 15 the Calder Quartet premieres a new string quartet, ...toward sunrise and the prime of light..., by Norman at the inauguration of the new president of the University of Southern California.
