Andrew Norman&rsquo;s <em>&hellip;toward sunrise and the prime of light&hellip; </em>Premieres at USC

On October 15, the Calder Quartet performs the world premiere of Andrew Norman’s …toward sunrise and the prime of light... In this new piece, the composer reworks themes and motifs from an earlier work, Sabina (for solo viola), for string quartet. The quartet performs the work on the occasion of the inauguration of the new president of the University of Southern California, C. L. Max Nikias. An alumnus of USC’s Thornton School of Music, Norman composed this work for the Calder Quartet, taking the title from Virgil’s Aeneid. Its general form is strongly reminiscent of Norman's original Sabina for solo viola, which also provided the musical material for the last movement of Norman’s brilliant work for string trio, The Companion Guide to Rome, premiered in the Spring of 2010 by the Scharoun Ensemble at the American Academy in Rome.  The Companion Guide to Rome was selected as a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2012.
