Music of Andrew Norman Across the US

Audiences throughout the US have several opportunities this month to hear the music of Andrew Norman. On October 17, the Seattle Symphony features Norman’s Try in the first of its popular [untitled] concerts — a late-night series featuring new and contemporary works. The performance is led by Stilian Kirov and takes place in the Samuel & Althea Stroum Grand Lobby at Benaroya Hall. The Hartt School of Music’s Foot in the Door Ensemble also delivers a performance of Try on October 15 at the University of Hartford, conducted by Glen Adsit.

On October 18, David Alan Miller leads the Albany Symphony in a performance of Norman’s Apart. The performance takes place at the Palace Theater in Albany, New York. Apart (originally titled Apart, Together) was commissioned and premiered in 2011 by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra in celebration of its 40th anniversary. According to Norman, the work “explores issues of chance and choice, collective expression and individual identity.” He elaborates:

[Apart] will never sound the same way twice; I ask the players to make decisions on stage that change the shape and pacing and texture of the experience. At times they deliberately break apart from each other, playing in their own sense of time. At times they layer up in chance textures like the splatters on a Jackson Pollack canvas, and at a few key moments they come together and play with the unanimity of purpose and expression we associate with the best communal music making.

Also this month, the Stamford Symphony opens its season with a performance of The Great Swiftness. The performance, conducted by Eckart Preu, takes place on October 18 at the Palace Theatre in Stamford, CT, with a repeat performance on October 19.
