Andrew Norman named Musical America's 2017 Composer of the Year

Schott Music is thrilled to announce that Musical America has named Andrew Norman its 2017 Composer of the Year. Hailed as "one of the most important young composers in America" (The Boston Globe) and "master of a uniquely dazzling and mercurial style" (The New Yorker), Norman's work continues to electrify and enchant audiences worldwide.

Musical America, now in its third century as the indispensable resource for the performing arts, bestows its annual Musical America Awards in recognition of artistic excellence and achievement in the arts. Alongside Andrew Norman, the 2017 Award Winners include Yuja Wang (Artist of the Year), Susanna Mälkki (Conductor of the Year), Eric Owens (Vocalist of the Year) and Eighth Blackbird (Ensemble of the Year).

In his tribute article for the award, Alex Ross writes of Norman:

Norman has likened his start-and-stop rhythms and rapid-fire exchanges to video games, YouTube playback, and other digital-age phenomena. It is a voice singularly his own, and several major commissions from leading orchestras and soloists of our time have vindicated his vision.

Norman Ryan, Vice President of Composers & Repertoire, Schott | EAM, comments:

Andrew's unique voice is a quintessential marriage of the contemporary times we live in with the rigor and structure of classical music forms handed down through the ages. From his earliest pieces such as Sacred Geometry and Gran Turismo through to his most ambitious work to date, the large scale symphonic work Play, Andrew's voice is one we have always believed will resonate long into the future and we are delighted that Musical America has recognized him with this well deserved honor.
