Andrew Norman Teams With DJ Eddie Marz for Brooklyn Philharmonic’s Beethoven Remix Project

The Brooklyn Philharmonic continues its Bed-Stuy Series this month with a program that features Andrew Norman’s arrangement of fellow Brooklyn-based artist DJ Eddie Marz’s re-mix of the Finale from Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3. The Brooklyn Philharmonic’s Beethoven Remix Project invited local composers and musicians to re-imagine and restyle the Finale from Beethoven’s “Eroica”Symphony. The BPO approached Andrew Norman to serve on the Project's selection committee and arrange the winning re-mix for orchestra. The pool of participants was narrowed down to five finalists: DJ Eddie Marz, Dan Friel, Boima Tucker, Andrew McLean, and the Swaggbrarians. Mr. Marz’s winning work will be heard in the orchestral arrangement by Andrew Norman at the Bedford-Stuyvesant Restoration Plaza, led by Brooklyn Philharmonic Music Director Alan Pierson, on June 9. Norman comments:

I'm thrilled to be working with the Brooklyn Philharmonic on the Beethoven Remix Project. DJ Eddie Marz's remix, much like Beethoven's 3rd itself, packs a big punch. Eddie also did some remarkably subtle and complex things with the layering of musical fragments in different tempos; it was a challenge and a treat to figure out how to notate his work so an orchestra could play it.

The program also includes the music of Mos Def (arr. Derek Bermel), Cole Porter, Lena Horne, Fats Waller and more in an evening that celebrates the eclectic and rich musical heritage of the “Borough of Kings.”
