Anders Hillborg Joins Faber Music

Faber Music announces the signing of an exclusive worldwide publishing agreement with leading Swedish composer Anders Hillborg.

Hillborg is that rare composer whose music strikes a chord across many different countries and cultures. Born in Sweden in 1954, his early interest in electronic music developed from a beginning as a keyboard improviser in a pop band, but contact with Ferneyhough, and the music of Ligeti quickly led to a fascination with counterpoint and orchestral writing.

Since then, Hillborg’s love of pure sound and the energy that he gives it, has appealed to many major conductors such as Esa-Pekka Salonen, Alan Gilbert, Sakari Oramo, Kent Nagano, David Zinman and Gustavo Dudamel, who have taken his music to orchestras across America and Europe.

Hillborg's clarinet concerto, Peacock Tales, for Martin Fröst, displays another strand of his large and varied output: a sense of humor and the absurd. The piece has been taken up with enthusiasm in several different versions and has had hundreds of performances. Mouyayoum, for voices from the 1980s, is one of his most popular works and emanates from his own experience singing in a choir as a teenager. In this and other vocal pieces, his ear for the subtleties of the human voice and his natural lyricism is a striking feature. Above all, there is always a refreshing stylistic freedom and the ability to communicate.

In just the last few months, Hillborg’s music has been performed at the BBC Proms, in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Minnesota, Taiwan, Seoul, Finland, Amsterdam, Vienna, Munich and Hamburg (where he is Composer-in-Residence with the NDR). A BIS recording released on November 10 featuring the Stockholm Philharmonic, gives an exhilarating window into Hillborg’s talent; the 30-minute Sirens is presented by Esa-Pekka Salonen, Beast Sampler and O Dessa Ögon are conducted by Sakari Oramo and Cold Heat is conducted by David Zinman. There are already at least 24 recordings that feature Hillborg’s music, including four portrait discs.

The first Hillborg work to be published by Faber Music will be Scream Sing Whisper (23 minutes/18 players) for the Asko|Schönberg Ensemble which premiered on November 19, conducted by Christian Karlsen at Amsterdam’s Muziekgebouw. This is Hillborg’s second work for ensemble – the first being Vaporized Tivoli (2010) for Ensemble Modern. Future projects include a Violin Concerto for Lisa Batiashvili (his second) commissioned by the Stockholm Philharmonic (with Sakari Oramo), the Leipzig Gewandhaus (Alan Gilbert), Minnesota (Osmo Vänskä) and Seoul Philharmonic orchestras, which will be premiered in October 2016.
