Amsterdam Sinfonietta Performs the Dutch Premiere of Andrew Norman's Sabina for String Orchestra
Oct. 18, 2023
On October 13, the Amsterdam Sinfonietta, led by Candida Thompson, performed the Dutch premiere of Andrew Norman's Sabina in a new reduced version for string orchestra. The work is included in a program that the ensemble is touring throughout the Netherlands through October 21. Sabina was inspired by the composer's 2006 trip to the ancient church of Santa Sabina on Rome's Aventine Hill. He recalls:
"I entered very early in the morning, while it was still dark, and as I listened to the morning mass I watched the sunrise from within the church. The light in Santa Sabina is breathtaking; the large clerestory windows are not made of glass but of translucent stone, and when light shines through these intricately patterned windows, luminous designs appear all over the church's marble and mosaic surfaces. As I watched the light grow and change that morning, I was struck by both its enveloping, golden warmth and the delicacy and complexity of its effects. I sketched the material for this piece soon after that unforgettable experience."
Sabina is also available from Project Schott New York (PSNY) as movement IX of Norman's A Companion Guide to Rome for string trio, as well as in versions for solo violin, solo viola, and solo violoncello.
