American Premiere of Tobias Picker's Thérèse Raquin in Reduced Version at Dicapo Opera Theatre

Feb. 01, 2007

Following three internationally acclaimed productions in North America (The Dallas Opera, 2001, L'Opéra de Montréal, 2002, and San Diego Opera, 2003), Thérèse Raquin now sees the American premiere of the composer’s new chamber version at Dicapo Opera Theater on February 16, 2007. The European premiere of this version was given by Opera Theatre Europe at the Linbury Studio of the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, London last March. Picker has reduced the instrumentation to 18 players, creating a chamber opera version which heightens the claustrophobic atmosphere of Emile Zola's novel. Similarly to Emmeline (1996) and An American Tragedy (2005), Picker's Thérèse Raquin spins an engrossing tale of dangerous passion and desire. An unsuspecting husband, an adulterous wife, and her rapacious lover form the core of Gene Scheer’s libretto. At Dicapo, Beverly O'Regan Thiele and Audrey Babcock sing Therese in alternating casts, David Adam Moore, Laurent, Brian Stucki, Camille, and Cecilia Angell, Mme. Raquin.

This new production of Thérèse Raquin is directed by Michael Capasso and conducted by Steven Osgood and will be performed on February 16, 17, 18, 23, 24 & 25, 2007.
