Alvin Singleton’s After Fallen Crumbs in Atlanta

Jun. 01, 2011

Alvin Singleton’s After Fallen Crumbs in Atlanta

Composed in 1987, After Fallen Crumbs was completed during Singleton’s tenure as Composer-in-Residence for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra from 1985-88. Now, the piece is one of Singleton's most heralded and iconic orchestral scores and returns to Atlanta in two performances led by Robert Spano on June 2 and 4. Written in memory of Martin Luther King Jr., the work is described by Singleton as “fanfare-like”, and he notes that it shares similar musical themes and the general spirit of its predecessor, Fallen Crumbs, for male a cappella voices, that the orchestra work references.

Singleton enjoys a long and fruitful history with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, which premiered his Miaka Kumi earlier this season, a work written in commemoration of Robert Spano’s 10th anniversary as music director.Singleton is currently at work on a new piece commissioned by the orchestra, scheduled for premiere under the direction of Maestro Spano in Spring of 2012.
