Alvin Singleton Portrait Concert at Roulette

To celebrate Alvin Singleton’s 75th birthday, Brooklyn’s Roulette presents a tribute concert of seven of the composer’s chamber and solo works for strings and piano, including the US premiere of Argoru IV for solo viola. The concert takes place on March 10 as part of the Interpretations Concert Series.

The program features the Momenta Quartet with a performance of Singleton’s Somehow We Can and Secret Desire to be Black, as well as pianist Joseph Kubera performing Baked in the Cake, Argoru I and In My Own Skin. Singleton's Be Natural, for three string players, receives a performance by cellist Meaghan Burke, violist Stephanie Griffin and bassist James Ilgenfritz. The evening also includes the US premiere of Argoru IV, performed by Griffin, which was composed in 1978 and given its world premiere by violist Martin Goldman in Darmstadt, Germany.

Coming up this season, Robert Spano leads the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in two performances of Singleton’s Different River on April 7 and 8, and on May 22 James Conlon leads the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra in the world premiere of Prayer, for tenor soloist, chamber choir and ensemble as part of the Cincinnati May Festival.
