Alban Berg’s Lulu at The Metropolitan Opera
May. 04, 2010
The Metropolitan Opera performs a condensed run of Alban Berg's Lulu with performances on May 8, 12, and 15. Fabio Luisi conducts, and Marlis Petersen stars as the titular character, Lulu. The production features John Dexter's remarkable staging, which has been praised by The New Yorker as "an effective platform for Berg's expressionist masterwork—the most harrowing, and movingly lyrical, depiction of human depravity in the operatic repertory." Partly composed using the serial technique of Berg's teacher Schoenberg, Lulu is remarkably emotive, evoking Wagnerian leitmotifs with individual tone rows for each character.
