Alarm Will Sound debuts Expanded Version of Valgeir Sigurðsson’s Veej

New York’s intrepid contemporary music ensemble Alarm Will Sound gives the debut performances of Valgeir Sigurðsson’s Veej in a revised and expanded version. Alan Pierson leads the ensemble in both performances, which take place May 10 at Sheldon Concert Hall in St Louis and May 13 as part of the Ecstatic Music Festival at Merkin Hall in New York.

Veej was originally commissioned by Alarm Will Sound, who gave its premiere in St Louis in 2015. The work was developed from a 15-measure sequence of MIDI information. The title comes from the composer’s nickname, given to him by fellow composer and collaborator Nico Muhly.

Sigurðsson’s latest album, Dissonance, is now available from Bedroom Community. The album features three of Sigurðsson's recent large-scale works: No Nights Dark Enough (2014) for chamber orchestra and electronics, Eighteen Hundred and Seventy-Five (2013) for orchestra and electronics, commemorating the 125th anniversary of Icelandic settlers in Manitoba, and Dissonance (2014), a 23-minute “explosion” of a single moment from Mozart's 'Dissonance' Quartet, K.465, written for viola da gamba and electronics.
