A Look Back at the Tippett Centenary 2005

Feb. 01, 2006

TippettLast year's world-wide celebrations featured distinguished Tippett interpreters alongside a younger generation discovering the excitement and passion of one of music's great visionaries. We had the wonderful experience of Lang Lang playing the Piano Concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir Colin Davis; the seasoned Lindsay Quartet programmed with a brilliant young French quartet; and a young cast at the Chicago Lyric learning a Tippett opera with Sir Andrew Davis and Sir Peter Hall.

Among the many highlights: two productions of The Midsummer Marriage, at the Royal Opera House London with Richard Hickox, and at the Chicago Lyric with Sir Andrew Davis. No less than four new productions of The Knot Garden, including a UK tour and a greatly praised Viennese presentation. Blazing performances of The Rose Lake (including Los Angeles) and the symphonies (Mark Elder with the Hallé, Sir Colin Davis and the LSO at the BBC Proms, Mark Wigglesworth conducting the Fourth with orchestras around the world).

And among more than 90 presentations of the great oratorio A Child of Our Time were four fine performances with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and the Washington Chorus. This work has reached hearts all over the world including the Phillipines, Hong Kong, Bangkok and Australia, and many times in Germany. It was even staged by English National Opera in London.

Tippett is back in the repertoire. The calendar already has many performances, there are more planned. The special Schott website www.Tippett100.com will now remain as a record of the centenary year. Future Tippett performances can be found at www.schott-music.com.
