World Premiere of Jörg Widmann's <em>Babylon</em> at Bavarian State Opera

The Bavarian State Opera has a distinguished legacy of historic premieres and dazzling new productions, and this year’s season shows no signs of slowing down the trend with the world premiere of Jörg Widmann’s first opera, Babylon. Opening on October 27, Kent Nagano leads the company with the Bavarian State Orchestra and Chorus for the premiere run of this highly anticipated new work. Working in close collaboration with Widmann, acclaimed philosopher Peter Sloterdijk has provided an original libretto and Carlus Padrissa directs the production with La Fura dels Baus, the Barcelona-based cutting edge theatre company internationally recognized for its stunning and elaborate performances.

Commissioned by the Bavarian State Opera, the work spotlights the struggle between chaos and necessary order within the original Babylon myth. Widmann portrays this duel with a score that at once contains a complex and disparate variety of musical material while maintaining a strict organization and formal control.

Claron McFadden leads the cast as the Soul, with Anna Prohaska as Inanna. Babylon runs through November 10 and will return on July 21, 2013 for a performance at the Munich Opera Festival.
