Music of Kurt Weill Returns to Carnegie Hall’s Spring for Music Festival

Carnegie Hall’s annual Spring for Music Festival hosts the Detroit Symphony Orchestra on May 9 with a program featuring Rachmaninoff, Ravel, and Weill’s The Seven Deadly Sins, conducted by Leonard Slatkin and featuring soprano Storm Large as Anna I. The orchestra also performs the Sins two days earlier in a free May 7 concert in Detroit, this time alongside two symphonies of Charles Ives. This is the second year in a row a North American orchestra has programmed a work by Weill for the innovative Spring for Music Festival; last year Jacques Lacombe led the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Weill’s Symphony No. 1. WQXR will broadcast the six-concert series live each night from Carnegie Hall, May 6 through 11. 

Prior to the performances in Detroit and New York, Large will sing The Seven Deadly Sins with the Oregon Symphony under music director Carlos Kalmar in Seattle on May 3 and in Portland, Oregon, on May 4 and 5.

Following the recent production of Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny at Manhattan School of Music, The New York Times remarked:

Few operas elicit anger like Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht’s still-ferocious 1930's satire Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny. And few times like the present seem so appropriate for the work’s coruscating attack on a culture of endless consumption... Its lessons are not just American ones: they bear repeating everywhere there is income inequality, austerity, deregulation or Black Friday sales. Highlighting its lessons makes the opera seem didactic, while Brecht and Weill’s essential masterpiece is anything but. It is as funny and as sad as it is furious, and packs its punch in a rich score... that transitions with devilish ease from chorale to fox trot. It is, in sum, a grand entertainment as well as a sobering mirror.
