Valgeir Sigurðsson Joins Faber

Faber Music announces the signing of Icelandic composer Valgeir Sigurðsson to their contemporary catalogue. Widely acclaimed for his work as a composer, producer, engineer, and musician, Sigurðsson is also the founder of the Bedroom Community record label which is home to Sam Amidon, Ben Frost, and Nico Muhly. In addition to his nearly decade long association with composer and well-known pop artist Björk, Sigurðsson has collaborated with a diverse roster of musicians including Kronos Quartet, CocoRosie, Feist, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, Hilary Hahn, and Brian Eno. With Muhly, director Stewart Matthew, and French perfumer Christophe Laudamiel, Sigurðsson co-wrote Green Aria: A ScentOpera, a revolutionary and olfactory work for the stage, which premiered at the Guggenheim Museum in New York in 2009.

Works available now from Faber Music include Sigurðsson’s string quartet, Nebraska, the ballet Architecture of Loss, as well as his Dreamland, for large orchestra and electronics. Nebraska, an evocative and scenic quartet in four movements, was commissioned by the Chiara Quartet and premiered at the Ecstatic Music Festival in 2011. His ballet Architecture of Loss, scored for chamber ensemble with electronics, is a visceral exploration of intimate and expressive textures. Premiered in New York last March by the Stephen Petronio Company, Architecture of Loss will receive two additional performances on November 14 in Irvine, CA and on November 16 in Dallas, TX. Sigurðsson‘s Dreamland was conceived as a soundtrack to the documentary by the same title, which explored the exploitation of Iceland’s natural resources. The work has been performed by the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and subsequently by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra for the Winnipeg New Music Festival.

Upcoming commissions for Sigurðsson include a new work for the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and an orchestral song-cycle for the Spitalfields Festival. Recordings of both Architecture of Loss and Dreamland (soundtrack) are commercially available from the Bedroom Community label.
