The Tales of Hoffmann Opens at San Francisco Opera

San Francisco Opera opened its new production of Jacques Offenbach’s The Tales of Hoffmann on June 5 using the acclaimed integral edition by Michael Kaye and Jean-Christophe Keck. Co-produced with the Gran Teatre del Liceu (Barcelona) and L’Opera National de Lyon, this new production features stage direction by Laurent Pelly and is conducted by Patrick Fournillier. Michael Kaye and Jean-Christophe Keck's integral edition of Hoffmann was first performed in 1988 at the Los Angeles Opera and received a previous staging at San Francisco Opera in 1996. Offenbach’s much-loved opera tells the story of a sensitive poet’s search for love and how he repeatedly finds it lies just beyond his reach. Full of memorable, marvelous melodies, The Tales of Hoffmann is a rich, imaginative, and psychologically astute operatic gem. The San Francisco run features an opening night pre-performance talk on June 5 with eight subsequent performances through July 6. The cast features Matthew Polenzani in the title role, joined by Natalie Dessay, Hye Jung Lee, Irene Roberts, Angela Brower and Christian Van Horn.
