The New York Philharmonic Performs Karlheinz Stockhausen’s <em>Gruppen</em> at the Park Avenue Armory

Gruppen, a groundbreaking work illustrating Karlheinz Stockhausen’s early exploration into spatial sound, is given its New York professional premiere by the New York Philharmonic on June 29 and 30, 2012. The performances, which mark the first time this work has been performed by a professional orchestra in New York, take place at the Park Avenue Armory, a vast 55,000 square-foot open cavern on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. The work is scored for 109 musicians, divided into three orchestral groups, each with its own conductor. Fellow contemporary music luminaries Matthias Pintscher and Magnus Lindberg will join Gilbert in leading the performances. The orchestral groups will surround the audience, which will be seated on the floor in the center of the hall, in risers along the circumference of the orchestral groups, and standing in the balcony surrounding the entire space. The concert also includes spatial performances of Boulez’ Rituel in memoriam Bruno Maderna, the Finale of Act I from Mozart’s Don Giovanni, and Charles Ives’ The Unanswered Question.
