<em>Street Scene</em> Highlights Major Weill Festival at Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music

Centered on main stage productions of Street Scene and The Threepenny Opera, the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) presents an unprecedented series of events this season with a yearlong, interdisciplinary festival celebrating the work and legacy of Kurt Weill. Sponsored by the Kurt Weill Foundation, the Kurt Weill Festival will include opera and musical theater productions, concert performances, cabaret evenings, master classes, guest lectures, pre-show talks, and a course devoted to Weill’s stage works. CCM has never before hosted a festival of this magnitude.
 
Festival highlights include fully staged productions of Street Scene (Nov. 15-18) and The Threepenny Opera (Feb. 28 - March 10), as well as concert performances of Weill’s Kiddush (March 10) and “Ho, Billy, O!” from Love Life (March 12). A pair of cabarets, one produced by CCM’s Department of Opera (Oct. 19-20) and one by and the Department of Musical Theatre (March 3-10), explore Weill’s enduring legacy in both classical and popular contexts. Victoria Clark and Ted Sperling give master classes; Kim Kowalke and Howard Pollack offer guest lectures and pre-show talks; and Professor bruce d. mcclung teaches a course on Weill.

Also this month:  the Pacific Symphony (Costa Mesa, CA) will perform Weill’s Seven Deadly Sins along with works by George Gershwin and Edith Piaf. Ute Lemper will sing Anna; male quartet Hudson Shad will portray the family. The performance, conducted by Carl St. Clair, runs from 8-10 November. Street Scene continues at Musiktheater im Revier in Gelsenkirchen (Nov. 10 – Dec. 15), directed by Gil Mehmert and conducted by Heiko Mathias Förster. Happy End gets a new production at Landestheater Neustrelitz, directed by Wolfgang Bordel (Nov.  10 – Feb. 23). Lastly, Symphony No. 2 will be performed in Hannover and Osnabrück by the NDR Radiophilharmonie, conducted by Michael Sanderling (Nov. 22-24), and again in Augsburg by the Philharmonishces Orchester Augsburg, conducted by Peter Kuhn (Nov. 26-27).
