Songs of Freedom: A Celebration of Chanukah Now Available from Schott Music
Sep. 24, 2012

The spirited holiday offering Songs of Freedom: A Celebration of Chanukah is now available for performance from Schott Music. A roof-raising medley of traditional Chanukah numbers for baritone, SATB chorus and orchestra arranged by Judith Clurman, Larry Hochman and Brian Stokes Mitchell, Songs of Freedom offers a thrilling addition to all holiday programming initiatives and is sure to bring audiences to their feet.
Songs of Freedom premiered in December, 2010 with the New York Pops and Essential Voices USA and consists of "Oh Chanukah, Oh Chanukah" a joyful folk melody ; "S'vivon," a swirling depiction of the dreydl; "Lichvod Ha Chanukah," a nostalgic folk song; "Mi Y'maleil," a song celebrating the victory of the Maccabees; "Haneirot Halalu," a reverent melody about candle lighting and "Maoz Tzur," a hymn which thanks the Rock of our salvation for the deliverance of the Jews from the Syrian Greeks as the ringing finale.
Though encouraged to perform the entire composition to truly capture the spirit and story of Chanukah, ensembles and choruses may perform individual songs independently of one another. The solo lines may either be performed by a solo artist or by a select group of singers, and the entire work can also be performed by a chorus and soloists from the chorus.
